Termites Bathurst & Surrounds

Diagnosing both the presence of termites and specific damage explicitly caused by termites (as opposed to structural deterioration, weather damage, building age or other pest infestation) is a specialised area of extermination.

At Signature Inspections & Pest Management, we offer a combined 75 years’ experience in the industry and specialise in the diagnostics, extermination and prevention of termites. Although most of us don’t see them because of the environment they prefer, termites are an extremely destructive pest.

They cause significant structural and economic damage to homes and commercial buildings by eating the cellulose materials on the inside of the structure. It is essential to have regular and thorough inspections of your home or business to catch early signs of termite activity.

Signs Of Termites

Wondering if you have termites? The following are potential signs of a termite infestation:

Doors or windows that are difficult to open or close

  • As termites consume timber, they create “mud tubes” in which they move around. These mud tubes have a high moisture content, which causes wood to swell and makes it difficult to move doors and windows.

Noise

  • Termites will sometimes make noise by banging their heads on the timber. If there is a severe infestation, the sound is detectable, particularly at night when the house is quiet.

Cracks in door jams

  • Not all cracks signify termite activity (and an expert will be able to tell the difference), however, cracks may be due to termites eating the timber.

Staining or “ballooning” of wall sheeting

  • This can be another byproduct of the mud tubes’ moisture content, causing the wall sheeting to stain or “balloon”. Again, the staining or ballooning may result from something other than termites, however, only an expert will be able to make that determination.
  • Remember too, that termites love moisture and are naturally attracted to a moist environment containing timber.

If you see some of these signs throughout your property or if you have any questions about the possible presence of termites, give us a call on 02 6332 3306 today.

Enquire Online

Termite treatment begins with a thorough property inspection by a pest management specialist. They will inspect the entire property (including gardens and trees) and will provide a comprehensive, written report detailing the results of the inspection.

Combining state-of-the-art technology with cutting-edge preventive plans and treatments, Signature Inspections & Pest Management works work quickly & efficiently to diagnose potential termite issues. Some of the technology that we employ includes:

Thermal Imaging

  • A thermal imaging camera detects differences in temperature which may indicate the presence of Termites.

Borescope

  • If we suspect termite activity in a wall, we can carefully drill a small hole and “peek inside” with the borescope. It allows us to conduct a thorough inspection without unnecessary damage to your home or business.

Moisture Metre

  • Termites love the combination of constant temperature, timber and humid conditions. The moisture metre detects anomalies in moisture content in floor wall and timbers which may indicate the presence of Termites.
Termite Inspections

Our treatment protocols include:

  • In Ground Termite Baiting & Monitoring

    • This is a preventative and treatment management plan. The team places stations containing termiticide rods within soil areas around your property.
    • We drill cores into the concrete areas of the property. Installed strategically and discreetly in prime foraging areas, the stations provide a window into the world of the termites.
    • The constant foraging of the termites will be directed to the in-ground stations, which termites find more attractive and palatable than wood. The termites then feed on the termiticide rods.
  • Termite Reticulation

Termite Reticulation is when a trench is dug around the perimeter and/or under the slab and specifically designed tubing with emitters is laid in the trench, covered and then “pumped up” with Termiticide.

This is replenished every 5 to 7 years depending on which Termiticide is used.

  • Above Ground Termite Baiting & Monitoring

    • It is another preventative management plan. These stations are placed above the ground, usually over an area with active termites.
    • The bait consumed will not kill the termites immediately. Instead, the bait allows the termites to return to the nest, passing the bait throughout the colony until the colony dies.
  • Chemical Termite Treatment

    • At Signature, chemical termite treatments are available but we don’t recommend this system as it cannot be replenished.
    • If you are looking for more information for this service, please get in touch with us.

Remember that responsible termite inspection and treatment includes follow-up protocol by a pest professional like the experts at Signature Inspections & Pest Management.

How Can I Minimise The Risk Of Termites?

There are measures that you can take to lower your risk of termite infestation. A partial list includes, but is not limited to:

Don't DIY Termite Treatment

  • First and foremost, NEVER try to remove or otherwise disturb a termite’s colony or workings. If you do, they will seal up the mud tubes and move elsewhere in the building. It is a job for experts and you do not want to make a potentially harmful situation any worse.
  • A termite-treated zone abutting the perimeter walls of your property may be essential to reduce the risk of re-infestation. Once established, you must avoid disturbing this zone. If the area is disturbed, entry by subterranean termites is possible.

Discuss Renovations With The Experts

  • Any termite management program is ineffective if building alterations or additions are made. The construction of awnings, verandas or other structures can provide a route for termite entry into the property. If you intend to make changes that may affect the protection of your home, be sure that you contact your termite specialist beforehand.

Don't Let Repairs Wait

  • Ensure that any leaking taps, showers or pipes underneath or adjacent to the property are repaired immediately to reduce moisture levels in the subfloor.

Remove Their Food Sources

  • Keep firewood, timber and paper away from the foundation or crawl space, eliminate stumps and debris near the property, place screens on outside vents and check decks and wooden fences for termite damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a termite?

Termites are small, brown creatures that are native to every country except those in Antarctica. They have large, bulbous heads and elongated bodies, making them look similar to ants. Their diet consists of dead plants at any stage of decomposition, as they are detritivores. A crucial fact to learn is that termite queens have the ability to live up to 50 years, which is the longest out of any insect, so their colonies can grow to huge sizes under her reign if left unattended.

  • What is a mud tube made from?

Termite mud tubes are made from small pieces of soil and wood. This protects them from predators whilst they are travelling back and forth from their nest to their eating grounds. By breaking the structure of these tubes, you can gauge if they are still active by seeing if they are repaired in the following days. If they are back up to scratch again, you can be certain that you have a termite infestation.

  • Are there any types of wood which termites prefer?

Yellow pine and spruce are the most palatable types of wood for termites, but they will also consume other kinds of wood such as birch, oak, mahogany, redwood and teak. If you own any wooden furnishings, none are safe from these creatures, so don't think you are an exemption even if you don't own their favourite food.

  • How will we kill your termites?

There are several different ways in which we can control – and hopefully eradicate – the termite population in your home, including in-ground termite baiting and reticulation. While boric acid is commonly used as a DIY method, it can be harmful to humans, so it's best that you hire a professional pest control service to carry out safe and environmentally-friendly treatments.

  • How does thermal imaging work?

Thermal imaging is done on a special camera which is able to detect and measure infrared radiation. This is the amount of heat coming from an object. The higher levels of radiation will appear as yellow or red, which is typical for living organisms such as insects, so we can spot these critters easily.

  • What is termite reticulation?

Termite reticulation is a treatment method which should be done before a house is constructed, and can help to prevent termite infestations from occurring in the future. The reticulation system is a network of pipes which are distributed throughout the underground of a property to distribute toxic termite-repelling chemicals throughout the entire foundation. This is a time-saving process which will save you from encountering potentially dangerous situations within the structure of your home.

  • Why do termites like moist environments?

Termites have bodies that don't retain much moisture, contrary to most other insects, so they need a constant supply of it from their environment. This is why higher levels of moisture in a building are attractive to them.
